A child could see this policy is rubbish

I was thinking about the three lone-parent families I know locally. One is a widow who had three children under 5 when her husband died. Another is a divorced man whose son chose to live with him, not his former wife. A third was left by her husband when she was pregnant. All of them work. Their childcare arrangements are fiendishly complex – and expensive. Their average age is over 40. Why these people should deserve less help than a couple raising children together is beyond me.

But I’m sure they will be delighted when I tell them that it’s OK because Mr Willetts is going to build more playgrounds.

Actew water trial a waste: expert

Actew's plan to spend up to $100million to trial a water purification plant to recycle Canberra's sewage is a waste of money, an infectious diseases specialist says.

The Australian National University Medical School's director of microbiology and infectious diseases, Professor Peter Collignon, said other measures being taken by Actew would ensure Canberra had an adequate water supply for the next 20 to 30 years.

He said adding treated effluent to the drinking supply should be considered only if no alternative existed.

The trial to find whether effluent from Canberra's main sewage treatment plant can be treated to produce potable water, is estimated by Actew to cost up to $100 million.

Professor Collignon said Actew's own report showed the largest purification plant would cost $300 million, not including operating costs.

Mayor McTease

Perot's were to the broad middle of American politics. "All of his political instincts on national issues are very, well, New York," notes Ben Smith of Politico.com. He favors gun control, opposed the death penalty for 9/11 terrorist plotter Zacharias Moussaoui, won't back a ban on partial-birth abortion, failed to trim generous public-employee union contracts, and favors same-sex marriage. He raised taxes dramatically during his first term and last week announced the slowing economy may require yet another hike during his second term. Rudy Giuliani has been accused of having been permissive on illegal immigration as mayor. Mr. Bloomberg will be accused of wanting to throw the welcome mat out to them.

As an internationalist who built a global financial-media empire, he has little to say to disgruntled heartland voters who are suspicious of their government--the usual fertile territory for an independent.
