| 2 Dutch soldiers killed, 1 wounded in fighting in Afghanistan
Around 1,650 Dutch are serving in the southern Afghan province of Uruzgan as part of the NATO mission there. Since their mission began last year, 14 Dutch troops have died. The fight took place around 5 kilometers (3 miles) northwest of Camp Hadrian, near Deh Rawod, said Gen. Dick Berlijn, the commander of Dutch forces in Afghanistan, in a statement. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende praised the soldiers' courage and offered condolences to their families. The mission in Afghanistan is dangerous and difficult, he said in a statement. Cpl. Poortema and private Schol worked side by side with their colleagues for a better future and new hope for the people there. The injured man suffered wounds to both legs in a separate fight at around the same time, but is expected to survive, the ministry said.

Back in session, at least in theory
There's a $7 billion hole in the Puget Sound area's highway plan thanks to the failure of Proposition 1 in November, but don't look for the Legislature to plug it anytime soon. In fact, don't look for state lawmakers to do much of anything substantive on the transportation front during the 60-day session that starts Monday. Oh, there will be lots of discussion: talk about new tolls, talk about where to find an additional $2 billion pay for a new Highway 520 bridge, talk about what's going to replace the committee of regional officials who put the ill-fated Proposition 1 on the ballot. But when it comes to action, not so much. Rep. Judy Clibborn, D-Mercer Island, chairwoman of the House Transportation Committee, said there are no pressing money issues facing this Legislature.
Las Vegas teen OD's on prescription meds
When you tell a doctor you're in pain, you expect an examination, and maybe a prescription for relief. But pain medication can be as addictive as heroin, and prescription drugs contribute to more overdose deaths than illegal street drugs. In a News 3 hidden camera investigation, Darcy Spears tells us how one young man's minor medical issue became a major addiction. John Delprete began taking pain pills as a teenager. After four years, his habit became too hard to handle. The amount of drugs he was prescribed, and the end result of his taking them all, has led to an investigation by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners for what his parents claim was a preventable death. "He was a very loving kid, always said, I love you mom, always gave hugs, was very understanding," said Donna Delprete, John's mother.
Israel Balderas Blogs From California Wildfires
Israel Balderas has been blogging about his experience to give viewers an inside look into what thousands of California residents are facing. 4:11 a.m. We just crossed the Vieja Indian Reservation and arrived in Alpine, California to refuel. Coming over the mountain range, you could feel the winds pushing the news truck. As we were driving up to Alpine, we could see fires to the south and north of our location. Because Alpine is located between a mountain range, you could see smoke haze on the horizon. There are several fires to the north of us located in the Flinn Spring Park area. As we got back on Interstate 8 heading west toward San Diego, we saw three different fire areas. Right now, it is 4:11 El Paso time, and we should arrive in San Diego within 20 minutes.
