Halfway to hope

I would lose myself," said Aretha Palma, 36, who's been addicted to crack for the last 12 years.

The Home's key ingredient is God, and Christian values are woven into every lesson.

"I found that the spiritual foundation is the number one thing they need," said the Rev. Doris Troup, director.

The women attend daily Bible studies and prayer groups to help redirect their priorities.

They become each other's support system until they are ready to stand on their own.

The walls and tables in the home are covered with reminders to keep its residents focused.

A quote in a plaque on the table reads: "I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life -- He gave me life that I might enjoy all things."

A Bible verse on the dry erase board in the living room reads: "Whatever is hidden away will be brought into the open and whatever is covered up will be found and brought to light."

And on the refrigerator: "I asked God to take away my habit.

Mother seeks retrial in death

The big issue yesterday was the witholding of important testimony of Dr. Cortes from the defense.

Cortes was clearly upset yesterday with the DA. When he called the defense after the verdict, he said that he was betrayed by the DA that there would be lesser charges.

The formerly distant Cortes all of a sudden is the one calling the defense after the trial is over.

And when he finds out what Sandra Eastwood denied in the afternoon session, I would not be surprised that he goes ballistic.

Eastwood without using the words, called Cortes a liar. I don't think it is good enough for Eastwood to escape this one. I think she may be in heaps of trouble.

What the Lieberman Endorsement Means — For Him

It's been a good week for McCain. His earlier endorsement by the Manchester Union Leader in New Hampshire was followed in the past few days with endorsements from The Des Moines Register, The Boston Globe and, most interestingly, Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee who was re-elected last year as an independent and who calls himself an independent Democrat. It remains to be seen if Lieberman's endorsement will help McCain with the independent voters in New Hampshire that put him over the top in the primary against George W. Bush eight years ago. More uncertain is what the endorsement means for Lieberman himself.

There is no love lost between Joe Lieberman and the Democrats, who for the most part despise his hawkish views on Iraq (and Iran) and who punished him for his ideological apostasies in the Connecticut Democratic primary in 2006 by denying him renomination and voting instead for anti-war candidate Ned Lamont.

Options vary for ADHD kids

Opponents of ADHD drugs suggest parents seek alternatives to drugs such as holistic treatments that are nutrition based, counseling and behavioral therapy and ensure a correct diagnosis is recorded.

Dr. John Jolly, a clinical psychologist in private practice in Jackson for 12 years, says a proper diagnosis is crucial for treatment of ADHD patients.

A learning disability will cause a child to be a slow learner, passive or inattentive. Those symptoms could mimic ADHD, but such disabilities or other conditions must be systematically ruled out before a true ADHD diagnosis is made, Jolly said. Improper diagnosis can result in patients being treated for a disorder that doesn't exist.

The side-effect warnings of ADHD drugs are a concern for parents even when the drugs work.
