Targeting link between HIV, prostitution and addiction

Women who sell sex for drugs will receive new attention from public health authorities interested in finding ways to curb the spread of HIV.

State and city health officials say they will join forces to explore the links between prostitution, drug addiction and transmission of the virus.

Officials with both agencies said they will hold the first in a series of meetings this month in an effort to tap the expertise of community organizations that have been helping women engaged in prostitution.

City madam loses appeal over three-year jail sentence

THE woman behind one of Southampton's biggest prostitution rings has had her appeal to cut her sentence refused.

Judges at London's Court of Appeal upheld Sharon Moir's three-year jail term despite the fact she argued it was "manifestly excessive".

The 47-year-old was convicted in June this year of running brothels and inciting and controlling prostitution for personal gain. She had been caught out after a police officer went undercover for an interview and Moir told her how to conduct herself as a prostitute.

Mr Justice Cooke said there was "economic coercion" by Moir - who would have between 10 and 12 girls a day working at her brothels in the city - in that she would take their work away if they didn't work extra hours.

Putnam eyes voluntary drug-testing program for students

Putnam County officials are considering a voluntary student drug-testing program that would reward participants with incentives like restaurant and movie discounts.

The school superintendent says school board members need more information on the proposal before approving it.

Last week, members of the Putnam County Drug Endangered Children Task Force -- made up of local law enforcement officials, school personnel and others -- proposed a countywide drug-education program.

They hope to teach Putnam students about the dangers of drugs starting in the fourth grade. They also want to launch a free, optional drug-testing program for middle and high school students.

Students who say yes to drug testing will get incentives such as movie discounts, store coupons and restaurant gift certificates.
