Beating The Addiction

Fewer teenagers are using drugs like marijuana and methanphetamines, but more teens are abusing prescription pain killers. A national teen drug use report released by President Bush found that highly addictive narcotic pain killers are as popular as ever among 50,000 teens surveyed. And that is a trend that is seen in South Dakota as well. They're known for knocking out severe pain and helping patients with chronic illnesses, but pain killers aren't being used by just the sick. "I tried it at a party actually first time, and a lot of people were doing it. I tried it and I fell in love with it first time I did it," a teen patient said. This teen can't be identified because she's going through treatment at Keystone's treatment Center. Her addiction to Oxycontin landed her here. "I didn't like the taste at first but I got used to it and I'd fene for that taste..that drip in the back of your throat," the patient said.

Las Vegas teen OD's on prescription meds

When you tell a doctor you're in pain, you expect an examination, and maybe a prescription for relief. But pain medication can be as addictive as heroin, and prescription drugs contribute to more overdose deaths than illegal street drugs.

In a News 3 hidden camera investigation, Darcy Spears tells us how one young man's minor medical issue became a major addiction.

John Delprete began taking pain pills as a teenager. After four years, his habit became too hard to handle. The amount of drugs he was prescribed, and the end result of his taking them all, has led to an investigation by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners for what his parents claim was a preventable death.

"He was a very loving kid, always said, I love you mom, always gave hugs, was very understanding," said Donna Delprete, John's mother.

Plumber to Promises: You Drained My Wallet

A Malibu man claims Promises Residential Treatment Center was filled with false promises. In a lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Craig Macintosh, a Los Angeles plumber, claims that last Father's Day, he checked into Promises for substance abuse. The facility, which has catered to stars like Ben Affleck, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, was not nearly as accommodating to Macintosh, at least according to the suit. Macintosh alleges he was "rapidly detoxing and desperate for help," when he was left with "no doctor, no meds and no food." Macintosh claims when the doctor finally saw him, he "didn't seem to know how to work the blood pressure machine." Macintosh says he bailed after only a few hours, and Promises refused to return his $34,000, but offered him a credit. He's suing for negligence, fraud and emotional distress.A Promises rep said they hadn't even seen the suit, so he couldn't comment. To hear Macintosh's entertaining account of what went down, tune in tonight to TMZ TV.

Congress returns to murky political scene complicated by presidential ...

The economy is now tied with the Iraq war as Americans' top concern, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll, and neither party knows who will be its presidential nominee.

Republicans who were hoping that a Democratic ticket headed by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would fire up their conservative base now must contemplate another possible Democratic nominee in Sen. Barack Obama.

GOP leaders also had looked forward to an early presidential nominee on their side to shift attention from their ties to President Bush. But that race is more muddled than ever.

New Hampshire exit polls indicate more GOP voters dislike Bush than many people had assumed. Not only did 92 percent of Democratic voters express unhappiness with the Bush administration, but so did half of those who voted in the Republican primary.

Goodbye (for now)

They will keep performing until around Thanksgiving. Then stems weaken and start to rot. If you don't cut them, they will simply fall off. When they start looking bad, I cut them back to 1 or 2 inches, put them in a corner with indirect light and leave them alone. I give them about ½ cup of water a week and no fertilizer. When the days lengthen in March, start giving what appears to be an empty pot a fair amount of water - but not so they are wet. In two or three weeks, green shoots will appear. You can begin watering according to the size and giving them fertilizer at half-strength. They will be ready to bloom and go back outside in May. This works well for tirellas and reigers but less reliably for tuberous begonias. You can also take the tuberous begonia tubers and winter them like bulbs and replant in the spring.

Pete Doherty Uses Meditation To Kick Drugs

Troubled British rocker Pete Doherty is using meditation to kick his drug habit and help him focus on Babyshambles' current U.K. tour. The 28-year-old singer completed a six week stint in rehab this summer to treat his heroin addiction, and is now using martial arts to help cure his addictions.

His band mate, drummer Adam Ficek, says, "You won't believe it but Pete is actually meditating next door, right now. I've got him into it. I do a lot of Tai Chi... Stranger things have happened in the world of Babyshambles."
